Dear Kristin,
I have twin daughters, Laura and Rachel, who are 6 years old. My husband and
I adopted them from China when they were 13 months old and they are the
light of our lives. We have truly "Americanized" them. They have little
southern accents and love fried okra and grits! Like a lot of busy families
we eat out more often than we eat at home. One day I picked the girls up
from day care and as soon as we were heading home Rachel said, "I want to go
eat at Applebee's tonight."
Having already decided that we eat out way too much I was planning to cook
dinner that night so I replied, " no, tonight we are eating at home". After
a moment of silence from the back seat Laura said, "Well then, when the man
brings the food - I want pizza!" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at
the idea that my children think the only way to get dinner is to go get it
or have someone bring it to us!
As you can see from these pictures I took on a visit to the Montgomery Zoo
last summer, they are beautiful beyond words. I would love to have photos
that capture not only their physical beauty but also the beauty of their
souls. I know all adoptive parents will understand when I say that I
couldn't love them more had I carried them in my womb rather than in my
heart. I hope you will consider them for your photo contest. Thanks so
much.

I know everyone thinks their child is the brightest, the sweetest - and certainly the cutest. And I'm no different - but what gets me the most is the things he says. How could so much whit and humor come from such a young man? (Caden is 3.)
One afternoon, Caden and I were on our way to meet my mother (Granna) for lunch at our favorite Tuesday lunch spot. From the back seat I hear, "Granna's a ...... treat ... But we don't get to eat her, but she's a treat to me."
Another time Caden was playing harmonica with my husband and he asked why the other side of the harmonica doesn't work: "Did they just patch it up so no music will fall out?"
And the other night at the dinner table we were praying before dinner. Every night is the same. He makes us all hold hands and he prays. Then he lets go of our hands and wants my husband and I to hold hands and pray again. This particular night, Caden asked God for a baby. All our relatives swear they did not "plant" any ideas in his head. He's just a loving little boy. Our family feels so right now. I love who we are, but I know things will change for sure, either with another little angel to bless our home - or as we just all age together. Being a parent makes your heart swell, your moods swing and humbles your soul.
We've always planned on getting professional, beautiful pictures taken when our family is "complete" (Caden is our only child so far), but when I saw this opportunity, I jumped. Thank you for the chance!

Shelby Ann Ball is my Angel.my gift from God..my miracle. Shelby burst into this world 13 weeks early (weighing 2 pounds 2 ounces) and blew my world apart.
She stayed in the NICU for 47 days and when she FINALLY weighed 4 pounds, they let me bring her home ON OXYGEN. For the 3 months at home when she was on oxygen, I was not only her mommy, but also her nurse.
I lived and breathed for her, praying everyday that she would be OK. Her little system was not even developed enough to make her feel hungry and cry.
So we had to wake her up every 4 hours and feed her. We kept her wrapped in
3 blankets and covered by 3 more because we didn't want her burning to many calories to keep herself warm. We could only hold her when we were feeding her, because babies grow best when they are quite and sleeping.
I tell you all this, because to look at her now, you would never know what we all went through. Shelby is a firecracker!!
When I look at her face I think about all of the things she has taught me over the past 21 months. I think I have learned more from her so far than I did in the 28 years before she was born.
She has taught me to laugh, be silly,
love always, trust unconditionally, dance, scream with joy, try new things, be spontaneous, challenge the rules, walk to your own beat, and just live life!!
You see, before Shelby was born I was a planner and I mean planner.
If it wasn't on my list, it wasn't getting done. I think God knew I needed someone to shake up my life, so he sent me Shelby at 27 weeks.
It was not the birth I had planned and she has "rocked my world" from day 1!!
When I look at her face, I sometimes think of her rough beginning. But, most of the time I think that she my living proof that miracles do happen, Angels do exist, and God is GREAT! I would love for you to capture the many faces of my miracle.
